Supplementing Dental Care with General Dentistry

Teeth, while durable, can deteriorate over time and constant usage. Folks should be more careful with their teeth because once they’ve outgrown their milk teeth, they have no way to regrow lost permanent ones. Various substances and ingredients, such as sugar and tobacco, can aggravate the degradation and rotting of teeth. Thus, daily dental maintenance in the form of brushing and flossing is required in order to preserve healthy teeth and gums.

Yet even with religious brushing and flossing, teeth can still suffer from complications such as dental caries, toothaches, and plaque buildup. There will be parts of the jaws that toothbrushes and floss can’t reach, and they’ll require an advanced method of cleaning. Fortunately, dentists who practice general dentistry can help their patients take better and complete care of their teeth.

Much of the duties of a practitioner of general dentistry revolves around preventative care. Dentists can advise patients on how to properly take good care of their teeth, as well as inform them of which foods and substances contribute to poor dental health. These dentists can also perform basic dentistry procedures such as tooth extraction, the filling of dental caries, and the prophylactic cleaning of teeth. Likewise, they can identify potential decay and other tooth problems in their early stages, and apply the necessary treatment to prevent these problems from worsening.
