Most
people are generally afraid of
the dentist. There's even a medical term for the phobia:
odontophobia.
Popular media have somehow reinforced the
stereotype that dentists are sadistic professionals that have an
arsenal of tools, ready to do unspeakable things to your teeth.
Contrary to such
stereotypes, dentists are highly skilled individuals that are good at
what they do. Aside from providing comprehensive services, dentists
are also committed to giving their patients anxiety and pain free
treatment. If you're a dental patient suffering from extreme dental
phobia, there are ways to conquer the fear of visiting the dental
practitioner.
You can start by having
the dentist administer a certain amount of novocaine to get your mind
off the pain during the procedure. When you do feel anything painful,
raise a finger to signal the pain so that the dentist can stop. If
you’ve been administered flu shots before, you know how needle
injections feel; you don’t have to see the needle up close when
anesthesia is put in. Breathe in and out, and keep calm when the
injections are being administered.
If you have been able
to bear massive amounts of pain when performing other activities,
there’s nothing to worry about when it comes to tooth extractions.
Tooth extractions are necessary when the tooth has become so decayed
that leaving it in the gums will lead to infections, threatening the
health of the adjacent teeth.
